Hellenic Coastguards have reported a collision incident in the sea area southwest of Cape Fasa, between the Maltese flagged freighter KATHERINE and the Panamanian flagged freighter BARU SATU. KATHERINE had sailed from Novorossiysk Russia bound for Italy, Magkera with 23 crew, laden with iron, and the BARU SATU from Piraeus to Bulgaria with 17 crew, laden with sugar.
The captain of KATHERINE reported that the ship has suffered damage resulting in the inflow of water into the No. 5 hold, which is now controlled, while material damage has been suffered by the BARU SATU in the forward section. No crew members of either ship have been reported injured, although some 14 members of the Katherine crew have been taken off the vessel. At the time of this report, the ships are still together, and the weather in the region is NNW wind, force 6 Beaufort.
