On the windy morning of 19 August 2018, ultra large container ship CSCL Pacific Ocean is struggling to clear her berth at Felixstowe with two tugs at the stern and her own bowthrusters – so Svitzer Deben is called in to add extra power at the bow, and she’s soon able to go ahead and leave the port.
Huge container vessels like this present a massive amount of windage, and sometimes gusts can outweigh the tug and thruster power on hand. Tug operators like Svitzer usually have an additional tug on standby especially to handle moments like these . . .
