Despite the grey weather, sailing barge Reminder takes us back to the days when fifty or more barges set sail from Harwich, Ipswich, Mistley and creeks on the Orwell and Stour on the tide, heading for the Thames . . .
London’s horse population relied on them for food and bedding, and to carry away the huge daily amounts of dung – brought back to fertilise the fields . . .
The human citizens also welcomed the vast quantities of everything from grain to bricks carried by these small coasting vessels . .
